Tips on Buying a Cordless Power Tool

We all love power tools, especially the cordless kind. They can get into tight corners and are easier to deploy in locations with no main lines power. How can you choose the right power tool?

Know your size
What size are you looking for?  It is tempting to pick the highest powered tool on the shelf.  More power means you have more torque to drive your drill bits, or more cutting power. But do you need all that power? If you need a power tool for the occasional tool, it is probably overkill going for 18 volts tools.
You will easily get a lower powered 12 volt version of many 18 volt power tools. Drills of this voltage will work quite fine and do good decking jobs with ease. Do not be afraid that the smaller power tools look sissy. If a smaller tool can do the job as well as a bigger higher powered one, go for it.

Do you really need the most new?

You are probably looking for the newest and most shiny power tool you can get, but do you really need it that new? Newer tools are less bulky and lighter because they use the newer Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries that are slimmer and can last longer than the older Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries.
G5043692If you need the power tool for occasional use, it is alright to go for the bulkier tools with the NiCad powered tools. For some tools you will see a $100 difference between the NiCad and Li-Ion powered tool.
Companies like DeWalt, Milwaukee and Ryobi have designed Li-Ion batteries for their older models. You could opt to go for an older version of a tool with NiCad power and buy a compatible Li-Ion battery pack as a bargain.

What features are you getting?

The quality of most US and European power tools does not differ a lot. Since the function of power tools from different companies is the same, look for benefits from added features. LED lights to work in dark places, quick change ability for bits and good ergonomics are some of the better features you can look for.

 What is the Quality?

Better quality equals higher price. US and European made power tools are of higher quality than Asian made tools. Pick your balance of price and quality. However, for heavy duty works, it is beat to keep quality in mind.

What Air Compressor do you need for your Power Tools?

If you are intending to buy an air power tool, you will require an air compressor to go with it. Air tools have the advantage of being lighter and longer lasting than their electric counterparts. The absence of a motor means there are less components likely to fail. The performance of an air tool will depend on the air compressor powering it. So how do you choose the best air compressor for your air tools?

Electric or gasoline?

Air compressors can be powered by either gasoline or electricity. The choice between the two power sources depends on where you are working. In an enclosed space like a warehouse or a workshop, an electric air compressor is the better choice as it is quieter and does not give off noxious fumes like gasoline types.

Tank size

The bigger the size the more air it can hold and the longer you can work with your air tools. Some tools like air hammers are used for brief intervals and can do ok with a smaller tank. Air tools used for longer periods like paint sprayers or sanders will need a bigger tank.

Pump type

Air compressor pumps can either be direct drive or belt driven. Direct drive pumps do not require oiling and are suitable for spray painting. They are also quieter. Belt driven pumps are ideal for heavier air tools.

Power rating

The power rating of an air compressor determines the tools it can run. Power rating for air compressors is measured by Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM).  Smaller home power tools can adequately run on 0.5 CFM while heavy duty power tools like sanders will require 10 CFM for the best performance.

Design

Air compressors can be mobile or stationary, horizontal or vertical. Mobile air compressors are ideal for outdoors work and they are mostly in the horizontal orientation. Vertical air compressors are ideal for saving space while operating heavier air tools.

Passion of Tools?  Are you crazy?

World is full of people, and this world is also full of tools.  There is THE ONE tool for every one of us.  Not many people can relate to it.  Some people might get a good laugh out of it.  Yet, there is a community of people who knows exactly what it means.

Just like people have passion for collecting stamps, buying antique clocks, filling their kitchen shelves with thousand different types of teapots, creating a room to keep their little engines and trains; there are some people who are passionate about their tools.  For them it is not just a tool, it is an ingredient to create something beautiful.

Every one of us possesses a quality which is a slightly different than the other, and that is exactly what tells us apart from all the others.  (This time I was not talking about people).  That was the tools talking to each other J

Not every hammer is same.  Not every screwdriver is capable of screwing /unscrewing all the screws.  Not every drill can penetrate the hardy plank.  And don’t even get me started on the saws; chain saw, circular SAW, cut OFF SAW, MITER SAW, BAND SAW!!!   OH MY! Its like I am in a candy store.

The beauty of the sanders:  It feels like sanding away the sorrows and sharp edges of life.  The beautiful shine penetrates through the wood like a light at the end of the tunnel.

Tools, they may look hard, sharp, edgy and sometimes dangerous, but it takes love, creativity and passion to actually see a beautiful table, a unique organizer, a wooden masterpiece or to create something that someone calls HOME!

Colors of Metal Shears/Snips, Do they matter?

Metal snips or shears.  For a long time I was under the assumption that aviation snips come in different colors, so you can pick your preference.  But now I know that it is not true.

Yellow handle snips are used to cut straight line or larger curves.  Green handle snips are designed to make right (clockwise) or straight cuts.  Red handle snips are for straight and left (counter clockwise) cuts.

As much as it is fun to make the right cut with the right tool, do not forget to wear gloves while doing so.  Working with sheet metal can be hazardous if right precautions are not taken.

I wonder if there are any other tools that are color coated?

Replies or comments are welcome.

Drill or Driver

Drill or Driver, that is the question of the day.

Power drills have been the most popular power tool for a long time.  Now we are seeing so many new power tools making their way to the top.  All those new tools with their new and improved functions make our job super easy.  But on the other hand they can be very intimidating and confusing to a person who does not know where to start.

For a long time I tried to figure out the difference between drill and driver.  Finally, I have my answer.  I hope this blog will help you understand the two tools better.

Lets start with the appearance of the tools.  Drills have a clutch at the top, so if you are driving a screw you can adjust it to stop at a specific torque allowing you to avoid over drilling.  On the other hand drivers do not have clutch.

While using a power drill you need to keep up with the drill in the forward motion to move the screw.  Whereas impact driver uses rotational force as well as side force in order to push the screw in faster.

Drills are helpful when we are working with small screws or working on a soft material.  As for heavy duty driving, or anytime we are driving the bigger fastener, impact driver really pays off.

Hope this information was useful.  Comments or questions are encouraged.  If you would like to add something to this topic please feel free to share your information.
