We all love power tools, especially the cordless kind. They can get into tight corners and are easier to deploy in locations with no main lines power. How can you choose the right power tool?

Know your size

What size are you looking for?  It is tempting to pick the highest powered tool on the shelf.  More power means you have more torque to drive your drill bits, or more cutting power. But do you need all that power? If you need a power tool for the occasional tool, it is probably overkill going for 18 volts tools.

You will easily get a lower powered 12 volt version of many 18 volt power tools. Drills of this voltage will work quite fine and do good decking jobs with ease. Do not be afraid that the smaller power tools look sissy. If a smaller tool can do the job as well as a bigger higher powered one, go for it.

Do you really need the most new?

You are probably looking for the newest and most shiny power tool you can get, but do you really need it that new? Newer tools are less bulky and lighter because they use the newer Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries that are slimmer and can last longer than the older Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries.

If you need the power tool for occasional use, it is alright to go for the bulkier tools with the NiCad powered tools. For some tools you will see a $100 difference between the NiCad and Li-Ion powered tool.

Companies like DeWalt, Milwaukee and Ryobi have designed Li-Ion batteries for their older models. You could opt to go for an older version of a tool with NiCad power and buy a compatible Li-Ion battery pack as a bargain.

What features are you getting?

The quality of most US and European power tools does not differ a lot. Since the function of power tools from different companies is the same, look for benefits from added features. LED lights to work in dark places, quick change ability for bits and good ergonomics are some of the better features you can look for.

 What is the Quality?

Better quality equals higher price. US and European made power tools are of higher quality than Asian made tools. Pick your balance of price and quality. However, for heavy duty works, it is beat to keep quality in mind.
